Wilson And Anderson Break Burnie Records

Darren Wilson and Kate Anderson took advantage of benign conditions to smash the men's and women's race records at the annual 10-kilometre road race in Burnie yesterday.

For 13 years the port town on Tasmania's Bass Strait coast has staged one of the best races in the country, won by the likes of Steve Moneghetti and Andrew Lloyd, Krishna Stanton and Carolyn Schuwalow.

The wind has usually howled on the out-and-back course along the main road from the town's centre. Yesterday, however, there was only a breeze and Wilson, a finalist in the 10,000 metres at last month's world championships, took full advantage. After reaching the turn with Julian Paynter in just under 13 minutes 50 seconds, Wilson came home strongly to win the event in 28:10.

Paynter was stricken by stomach cramps on the way back in and eventually stopped. National cross-country champion Mizan Mehari finished second, with Lee Troop third and Pat Carroll fourth. After recovering, Paynter finished fifth.

Anderson, a finalist in the women's 5000 metres at the world championships, was never pushed in the women's race, winning in 32:02, also a race record. Kylie Risk finished second and Liz Miller third.
