Rural Press Offer For Paper
Illawarra Mercury
Saturday August 23, 2003
REGIONAL media group Rural Press Ltd has its eyes on gaining control of one of Tasmania's main daily newspapers, the Burnie Advocate, as part of a $47.6 million takeover bid.
Rural Press has launched a $31.00 a share offer for the family-owned newspaper publisher Harris and Company Ltd, which is based in the north-western Tasmanian coastal town of Burnie.
The bid was not believed to be a surprise to staff at the newspaper, but Harris and Company has yet to make a formal response.
Rural Press already shares a relationship with Harris, with both companies jointly owning the Launceston daily the Examiner.
